Caregivers and Loved Ones Need Our Support Too

Caregivers and Loved Ones Need Our Support Too

Often times we focus on the person battling cancer and forget about their loved ones who support them day in & day out. Life is never as it once was. It’s a hard reality to face and can easily crush anyone who has to “stay strong” and fight the battle along side. It’s a job no one ever thinks is going to happen but when it does, they’re there to pick up the pieces. Unless you’ve been in that position, you’ll never truly appreciate what they do. Jamie’s husband, Garrick, is one of those people. For 3 solid years, his beautiful wife has been battling Acinic Cell Carcinoma (not to mention the multiple occurrences, surgeries & radiation treatments in the past). The grueling days and nights have been relentless. It has been a battle no one anticipated & everything about their life has changed. Luckily, Jamie has been able to take the last 7 months off of chemo by taking on another full-time job of juicing, vitamin infusions (& much more) which has helped her physically have more energy to do some of the things they used to… as well as work on their bucket list items! Unfortunately life has taken another swing to the gut & earlier this month, Garrick’s mother, “Gramee” (pictured) was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I honestly don’t know how he’s coping with all of this on top of everything else he has on his shoulders. Please just join me in praying for Garrick & all of the family and friends of those battling on the front lines of cancer. Pray for strength, peace...

Woohoo!!!!!!! My Makeup by Wendy (my favorite lady of course) made it to day 2!

Feels so great to have eye lashes and eyebrows even if it’s only 2 days! Even my ladies at the Starbucks drive-through today were stunned and complementing my eyes!!!! Funny how something as little as eyelashes you have no idea how thankful you should be until you lose them…… So many things in life I took for granted until going through this, but if anything it has only made me stronger, more thankful to be alive (trust me things could be soooo much worse) and I know I am going to beat this (I have never believed cancer would beat me, just taking longer than I originally imagined, hope this doesn’t mean I am in denial, lol). ~ Jamie Makeup by: https://www.facebook.com/makeupbywendy...

Angry hips Friday night. Super elevated pain and extremely exhausted…

However, I was happy to be out at my favorite place (Texans/NRG stadium) supporting the #FridayNightLights event hosted by a few of our favorite JH supporters… Brad & Joanna Marks along with Cal & Hannah McNair! It’s always soooo hard to find the energy to get out, but once I do I am always happy I dragged myself out of the house. After sitting for a little while, my hip stared hurting so bad that I was almost in tears. Garrick requested a chair with extra cushioning and check out what the awesome staff brought me in the pic Ever since part of my pelvis was removed at 23 years old, a broken hip training for Susan Koman at 25 followed by a a hip replacement, I’ve been dealing with pain off and on forever. Not...
Staph Infection?????

Staph Infection?????

All Red, Not Good Keep getting ear infections (since February), have a hole in my eardrum, lost part of my hearing and report kind of looks like I have several bacterial infections including staph. Started Levaquin 2 days ago, this is the first time I have seen results like this. Super tired most of the time, so hoping antibiotics will clear this up and maybe I will feel a little better. ~...
Dress Accomplished by H. Harloquin!

Dress Accomplished by H. Harloquin!

Finally got my dress accomplished!!!! The owner Haley of H.Harloquin dressed me for the event and was AMAZING!!!!! I was worried about chemo/treatment making me fluffier this year For the first time I dreaded dress shopping and put it off hoping I would drop a few pounds after I started working on major changes to my diet.  Since last year I gained weight likely due to all of the wonderful medication that goes along with cancer.  Soooooo my plans got put on hold for a short amount of time due to us recently putting a contract on a house finally (so moving, trying to sell our house, I am also the broker which means more work and closing might actually fall on Friday or Saturday, complete CHAOS!), Chemotherapy + Targeted Therapy, a recent severe pain episode that almost sent me to the ER our HUGE annual Gala, and of course life!!   So……. my future goals to make changes to all areas of my lifestyle to help fight my cancer, severe fatigue, energy, etc… is right around the corner and I am excited and hopeful!!!!!!  I am soooooooooooo SICK OF BEING SICK!!!!!  So everybody will see the puffier version of Jamie this year, but what I am really excited about is seeing everybody in the future after I have changed my life Anyways…….. I was unusually surprised by how wonderful dress shopping ended up being considering how insecure I was feeling about myself.  I never imagined I would find a gown this easy (or actually Haley found, lol).  She already had several in mind making it super easy for...

Texans Fans at MD Anderson

Texans Fans at MD Anderson

Just in case anybody was wondering, here is a picture with the 2nd Biggest Texans fan at MD Anderson!! Of course I am the #1 fan, lol Jewels has been taking my blood for almost 2 years now. When I first started getting my labs drawn with her I was a complete wreck. I was extremely nervous, once I took a whiff of the alcohol pad after they prepped my arm for the stick it was all over and then I was hyperventilating, near fainting…… just the anticipation of the blood draw gave me extreme anxiety!! Even at 31 (was actually 30 at the start of chemo), a grown woman turned into a 5 year old and if I happened to be lucky and my Dad was there I would hold his hand every time (maybe correct word is squeeze) Jewels is so good she would stick me and I could hardly feel a thing. As time went on I got to the point where I trusted her 100% and now I never have anxiety like before. I actually look forward to seeing her for my blood draw and talking about our Texans. ~...

Weekly Update (1 of 3) – Jamie / Hair Falling Out Again :(

Weekly Update (1 of 3) – Jamie / Hair Falling Out Again :(

Update 1 (1 of 3) : Hair started falling out again Doesn’t look like I will have hair much longer, picture shows how much fell out in the morning only and it has been like this for over a week. Not really sure what’s going on. My Hair History: Last July/August 2012 in the church parking lot was the first time I noticed it falling out. My hair was very long and this was the first time I lost my hair due to cancer (had cancer 3 previous times, but was treated with surgery and radiation). Around May/June 2013 my hair started growing a little after my chemo regimen was altered. Since then it seems like it would get little growing spurts when I was in between chemo cycles. It was still less than what I had before and seemed thinner, but I was thankful to have any hair. Last Sunday once again we were in the church parking lot and bye bye hair. I noticed a ton of shedding and wasn’t sure what to think, but it has continued to fall out by the handfuls. Our pet roller I used for our cat has now become my everyday tool, lol!!! ~...
Late Chemo / People Staring At Me – Pink Hair & Hat

Late Chemo / People Staring At Me – Pink Hair & Hat

Posting this a little late, was super busy working late night during chemo and didn’t get done at MD Anderson until about 10 pm last night. Interesting thing I have noticed with pink hair is people stare at me and I even felt like I was getting some dirty looks. When I had no hair, I think people knew what I was going through and tried not to make it obvious they were staring. We teach our kids not to stare and point fingers when they see signs of an obvious medical condition because we feel it’s rude, but pink hair from what I have noticed doesn’t fall into that category. I definitely get very obvious head turning and surprisingly I don’t think people realize that it is pink due to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Luckily when my pink hair is out of control I have a little pink Texans hat to cover it up ~...

Unfortunately, I have to give it up after the auction I am unbelievably thankful to have met such wonderful people that share the common goal in life of finding a cure. Jamie Gilmore featured in MD Anderson CancerWise

Fighting cancer with hope By Erica Quiroz Although Jamie Gilmore’s cancer has relapsed three times, she’s hoping the fourth time will be the charm to finally beat it. Gilmore was first diagnosed at 14 years old with acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), a rare salivary gland cancer. But her most notable experience with ACC happened when she was 20. She had pain on the left side of her face — the exact spot where she had a mass removed six years earlier — and was scheduled for surgery. A happy surprise “This time the tumor was all around my facial nerves,” Gilmore says. “The surgery was going to be five to six hours for removal of the tumor and then another five to six hours for reconstructive surgery.” As Gilmore’s husband and family waited, the anesthesiologist noticed her hormone levels were elevated. “My mom had me on a lot of natural remedies, and I thought that was why,” she says. “When the anesthesiologist came in and said I was pregnant, I was shocked.” Surgery was postponed, and Gilmore was referred to a high-risk OB-GYN at Texas Woman’s Hospital.”My doctor’s first priority was to ensure the safety of the baby,” Gilmore says. “Six weeks after delivery, I would be able to have the surgery.”Gilmore was induced at 38 weeks and her daughter, Mikala, was born Dec. 4, 2002. “She’s our miracle baby,” Gilmore says. Cancer spreads The following January, she went through a 12-hour surgery to remove the cancer and have reconstructive facial surgery.”I looked horrible afterward,” Gilmore says. “But my doctors did a great job, and I couldn’t believe how well the surgery...

Jamie’s Hope featured in MD Anderson’s Promise Publication

Jamie hopes for a cure One patient’s rare cancer inspires collective effort Promise – Fall 2012 – By Erica Quiroz Jamie Gilmore is a fighter. In 1996, she was diagnosed with acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), a rare cancer that affects the parotid gland, the largest of the salivary glands. She’s been in remission from it twice. Now, the 30-year-old native Houstonian is in her third bout with ACC. She created Jamie’s Hope for a Cure with her husband, Garrick Glascock, in May to help fund research for targeted therapy at MD Anderson. “My family and I were surprised that there haven’t been any new developments in ACC treatment,” Jamie Gilmore says. “We thought surely something would be different from 15 years ago.” ACC affects an average of 135 people a year and accounts for 6-10% of all salivary gland cancers. To help create awareness, Gilmore and her family promote Jamie’s Hope by selling maroon and white bracelets for $5. They also collect donations through the website jamieshope.org. “The money we raise funds research for other rare forms of cancer and for people who don’t have a standard form of treatment,” Gilmore says. Jamie’s Hope also partnered with the Texas Realtors® Leadership Program (TRL), after Gilmore, who owns a real estate brokerage firm, joined in March. With the TRL’s help, Jamie’s Hope organized an October gala, “Masquerade for a Cure,” at River Oaks Country Club in Houston, with all proceeds benefiting targeted therapy research at MD Anderson. “Each year the TRL decides on a legacy project that will benefit the community,” Gilmore says. “Once they heard my story and what I’ve...
